Soil Intake Rates and Application Rates in Sprinkler-Irrigated Orchards

If the sprinkler application rate is greater that the soil’s infiltration (intake) rate, water will pond on the soil surface and then run off. Water from sprinklers should infiltrate where it lands on the soil in order to minimize runoff and maintain the application uniformity of the sprinkler system. A high application uniformity allows a manager to irrigate efficiently while ensuring that the entire crop is adequately irrigated.
