Kiwifruit production is one of the nation’s newest and fastest-developing agricultural industries, most of which is located in the California Central Valley. California production has developed as a consequence of the phenomenal suc- cess earlier scored by New Zealand pio- neers who developed the first kiwifruit industry outside of the fruit’s native home, China.
The Fruits and Vegetables Import Manual covers all fresh fruits and vegetables, including fresh herbs and sprouts and immature nuts that have not been separated from their husk, that are imported from any foreign country, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, or Northern Mariana Islands. These fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs must be intended for consumption—not planting or growing. Only the approved plant part(s) of the fresh fruits, vegetables, or herbs is allowed entry.
This guide should be used to identify disorders when fruit arrives at overseas markets and to provide useful feedback to the industry when a problem occurs. It is aimed to assist growers, packers, wholesalers and exporters that may be present at outturn. As such, the information provided focuses on the most common problems occurring on citrus sent to our major export markets. It does not show defects, such as wind blemish, that should be sorted out before packing.
