Asparagus is a perennial that should produce for 15-20 years. Site selection should begin at least 1 year prior to planting in order to properly adjust soil pH and to eliminate serious perennial weeds. Select soils that are well drained and deep, such as sandy loams or well-drained loams. It is desirable to plant where asparagus has not been grown before in order to eliminate certain insect pests.

Harvested area for fall-season potatoes is forecast at 882,300 acres, 4 percent lower than 2009. Given average yields, fall potato production is expected to decline from the 393.5 million hundredweight of a year earlier. Because of tighter world supplies, grower prices are expected to average above year-earlier levels during the 2010/11 marketing year.

South Korea is the fifth largest export market for U.S. farm products. In 2008, the United States was the third largest supplier of fresh asparagus, and the second largest supplier of preserved asparagus by value. Increased imports of asparagus are expected as the trend for health foods continues. The current 27 percent tariff on U.S. asparagus imports will be eliminated immediately after the ratification of the Korea - U.S. FTA.
