Established in 1987, Woni is a family owned business that has been supplying high quality produce for over 2 decades. By introducing the practice of growing horticultural crops, we have made strides into various regions of Kenya, some of which were poverty stricken. 20% of our produce is grown on our own farms while 80% is sourced from contract farmers. Production is controlled by a team of Woni’s well trained and dedicated field staff who work in partnership with the farm managers and out growers.

Fresh-market vegetable supplies have been sporadic following several December freezes in Florida, periods of cool, wet weather in coastal California, and several periods of subfreezing temperatures in California and Arizona. In addition, Mexican vegetables were damaged by a 2-day freeze in early February (extent of damage is unknown at this time). As a result, vegetable prices are now at or above the highs experienced a year earlier.

For some people organic agriculture is “farming without chemical fertilizers and pesticides”. This is short and concise, but misses important characteristics. Organic agriculture follows the logic of a living organism in which all elements (soil, plants, farm animals, insects, the farmer etc.) are closely linked with one other. Organic farming therefore must be based on a thorough understanding and clever management of these interactions and processes.

Eggplant is a warm-season, frost-sensitive vegetable that requires a frost-free growing season of 135-150 days. Temperatures that produce the best growth are between 70-80°F. Temperatures below 65°F result in poor growth and fruit set. The use of black plastic mulch will improve yields in certain years.
Eggplant benefits from irrigation during the period of flowering and fruit set. If soil water is limited at these times, yields will be limited.
